The replacement interval for an HVAC filter depends on the filter, system and operating conditions. Start with the equipment and filter manufacturer instructions, then record the actual change date.
Find the system instructions
Identify the air handler or filter cabinet model and the installed filter dimensions. The nominal size on a carton can differ from actual dimensions, so confirm that the filter fits the slot without gaps or crushing.
Watch performance and condition
Inspect the filter on the manufacturer’s recommended schedule. Dust load, pets, construction and hours of operation can affect how quickly it needs attention. A calendar reminder is a prompt to inspect, not an automatic fit or airflow guarantee.
MERV is a separate decision
EPA says a higher MERV rating captures more of certain particle sizes, but recommends choosing a filter the system fan and slot can accommodate. Consult an HVAC professional if you are uncertain about a higher-efficiency filter.
